A rough second period doomed the Windom Area boys hockey team Tuesday night, as the Eagles fell 8-2 to Redwood Valley in the Section 3A playoffs at the Windom Arena.
The Cardinals scored with 19 seconds left in the opening period to take a 2-1 lead, then scored twice in the first 1:18 of the second period to go up 4-1. But Redwood Valley tacked on three more goals in the second period, stretching the lead to 7-1.
Redwood got on the scoreboard 3:30 into the game, but the Eagles answered a minute later when Jessy Gentry fired home the tying goal, assisted by Keaton LaCanne and Andrei Rivera.
Late in the first, the Eagles were called for a penalty, with Redwood capitalizing on one of its six power plays in the game, taking a 2-1 lead.
The Cardinals then scored on their first two shots of the second period and outshot the Eagles 16-7 in the second period on their way to the 7-1 lead.
Windom cut the deficit to 7-2 at the 2:20 mark of the third when Alex Cory scored off assists from Gentry and Rivera, but Redwood answered just over a minute later to seal the win.
Redwood outshot the Eagles 29-18 for the game.
Keagan Koster had six saves in the loss, while Kole Espenson stopped 15 shots.
