The Windom Area girls hockey team was finally able to break through in the third period Saturday, scoring three goals in rapid succession to claim a 3-1 win over Morris-Benson Area at the Windom Arena.
The Eagles had been able to put good offensive pressure on much of the game, but had been stymied by MBA goalie Ava Breuer. Meanwhile, the Storm scored a power play goal in the second period to take a 1-0 lead.
But in the third, the Eagles caught a break. A shot by Lyvia McManigle was stopped by Breuer, but the puck trickled away from the Storm goalie, allowing Reagan Haugen to swoop in and poke the puck into the net for a 1-1 tie.
Less than a minute later, Ella Dockter pulled in a clearing attempt near the blue line and fired a bouncing puck toward the net. The puck hopped over the glove of the Storm goalie for a 2-1 lead.
Then, a minute later, Haugen won a face-off for the Eagles, sweeping the puck to McManigle, who snapped a wrist shot into the net for a 3-1 lead.
The Eagles outshot MBA 42-15 for the game. Fiona Robillard finished with 14 saves in the win.
