The Windom Area boys hockey team turned in its best defensive showing of the season in Saturday’s finale of the Windom Area Holiday Tournament.
The Eagles held Worthington to 17 shots on goal in the game, with few quality scoring chances.
Eagle senior Nick Espenson’s hat trick gave the Eagles a 4-1 victory, capping a round-robin tournament that ended with a 1-1-1 record.
Espenson got the Eagles on the board 13:17 into the first period, off an assist from Keaton LaCanne.
Then, 1:48 into the second, Espenson netted his second goal of the game for a 2-0 lead.
Worthington cut the lead to 2-1, but the Eagles put the game away with back-to-back goals to close the second period. Jonah Lohse gave the Eagles a 3-1 lead, with Espenson scoring his third of the day with 57 seconds left in the second.
Faribault 1-2-1-0 = 4
Windom Area 2-1-1-0 = 4
Friday’s game saw Windom Area and Faribault battle back and forth for 59 minutes, with the game officially ending in a 4-4 overtime tie.
For the sake of tournament standings, an unofficial tiebreaking shootout was held, with Faribault winning the shootout.
Faribault held an early lead, but the Eagles played beat-the-clock at the end of the period. Nick Espenson tied the game at 1-1 at the 10:38 mark, then, Jessy Gentry found the back of the net an instant before the final buzzer of the period, giving the Eagles a 2-1 lead.
Faribault tied the game 48 seconds into the second, but the Eagles regained the lead at the 11:49 mark on Espenson’s second goal of the game. But Faribault tied the game at 3-3 going into the third.
The Falcons took the lead 1:40 into the final period, but Bodi Parker scooped up a rebound in front of the net for the tying goal at the 6:30 mark.
The teams then played a scoreless eight-minute overtime.
Faribault outshot the Eagles 31-29. Kole Espenson finished with 27 saves.
