A handful of voters were in the ballot boxes at 7:55 p.m. in the Windom Community Center, a far cry from what Windom’s voting headquarters saw earlier today.
By the time the polls closed, more than 1,500 people had voted there, according to voting machine tallies. Based on that information, there’s a chance that it will finish close to Windom’s turnout in the last presidential election — once the early votes and absentee votes are added.
That year, the combined tally for Ward 1 and Ward 2 council candidates was 1,924.
“It was steady all day,” said Elaina Nichols, who has been an election judge in Windom for about a decade. “I got here at 2 p.m. and the judges told me it had been busy up until then. And it’s been busy since then.”
Leesa Arndt, city finance assistant, has worked on Windom elections for 12 years, but this is her first time in charge of an election site. She noted that this is among the busiest she has seen.
“The busiest I saw it was about the time that Toro let out,” Arndt said (which is late afternoon).
