In January 2019, while attending a routine doctor visit, Monica Hagen’s life suddenly changed.
Hagen, the daughter of John and Vera Sandbo, was raised in Mt. Lake, graduating from Mt. Lake High School in 1994.
After graduation, Hagen left home to attend college in Mankato. For the past 27 years she has resided in Watonwan County. Hagen loves to do puzzles, bake and spend time with her family and friends.
Learning the news
Hagen went to her doctor for a routine mammogram exam one day in January 2019. From the exam, Hagen was told that she had an area of concern in her left breast. The area of concern showed breast calcification.
Breast calcifications are deposits of calcium in the breast tissue. This can sometimes be an early sign of breast cancer.
“It was really tiny dots. There was a cluster of them, but they were super tiny, tiny dots,” Hagen said of the x-ray she was shown from her mammogram results.
