Things were eerily similar to a season ago for the St. James/Windom/Madelia girls soccer team as it opened the Section 2A playoffs Monday night.
Despite a head-to-head win over Triton, the Wings were seeded ninth, while the Cobras were seeded eighth.
The long drive to Dodge Center resulted in a long game, as the Wings and Cobras battled for 100 minutes of play without a goal.
That sent the game to a five-round shootout of penalty kicks. Each team converted two, with Dayanara Coreas and Harriet Lohse finding the net for the Wings.
With the five-round shootout tied 2-2, the shootout continued into sudden death. Both teams’ attempts were stopped in the first two rounds.
In the third sudden death round, the Wings’ shot attempt was stopped, but Triton’s sailed into the net, giving the Cobras the victory.
