Fairmont was able to mount a rally over the final 40 minutes Thursday night to claim a 2-1 victory over the Wings United boys soccer team in Windom.
The Wings were able to strike first with good offensive pressure early in the game. After rattling a shot off the crossbar, the Wings were able to work the ball into the attack zone, when the Cardinals were whistled for a foul and a yellow card inside the penalty area. That gave Alex Gomez a penalty kick, which Gomez fired past the keeper into the lower-right part of the net for a 1-0 lead.
The Wings held the lead the rest of the opening half, with keeper Erick Zamora making a handful of high-quality saves to preserve the lead.
But the Cardinals were able to crack through the Wings defense twice in the middle stages of the second half to take the lead. Fairmont then held off a flurry of offensive chances for the Wings in the final 10 minutes to preserve the win.
