Thursday proved to be a historic night for the Wings United girls soccer program, as the Wings picked up the first victory in program history, defeating Worthington 2-0 at Trojan Field.
The Wings went 0-3 against varsity competition in their first season, then went 0-15 in their first full varsity season last year. SJWM started this season 0-2.
The Wings got on the scoreboard in the first half on an alert play. The Wings pressed forward into the attack zone and won possession of a loose ball, kicking it back to set up an attack. But Dayanara Coreas noticed the Trojan keeper out of position and lobbed a high 30-yard shot over the keeper’s head into the back of the net, giving the Wings a 1-0 lead.
The Wings were able to turn aside a handful of attempts by the Trojans to equalize the score. Then, early in the second half, the Wings caught a break on offense. The Wings peppered the Trojan goal with shot attempts and Worthington was unable to corral the loose ball, which found its way to Tora Hemmingsen, who knocked a shot just across the goal line, giving the Wings a 2-0 lead.
The Wings were able to prevent the Trojans from scoring, as SJWM forced a pair of Trojan shots over the crossbar of the goal in the second half.
