A historic night for the Wings United girls soccer team ended with the Wings on the short end of a 5-1 decision against Fairmont Tuesday.
The game was the first Wings girls soccer game played in Windom, under the lights at the team’s temporary Windom home inside the track.
Fairmont broke a scoreless tie halfway through the opening half when a scramble for a loose ball in front of the net was poked past Wings keeper Fernanda Zepeda Alvarenga.
With 14 minutes to go in the half, the Cardinals stretched the lead to 2-0, but the Wings were able to battle back.
A pair of shots by Audrina Marquez doinked off the goalposts, leaving the score tied. Then, late in the half, Marquez was able to drive the ball deep into the attack zone before dropping a pass to Dayanara Coreas, who booted a shot over the outstretched arms of the Cardinal keeper into the back of the net.
The Wings were able to continue applying offensive pressure in the second half but were turned aside at every instance. Meanwhile, the Cardinals scored a pair of quick goals to start the second half, then added a third late in the game to secure the 5-1 win.
