A historic night saw an opposing player steal the show Tuesday, as the Wings United boys soccer team fell 7-1 to Tri-City United in the first varsity soccer game played in Windom.
The game was the first event played on the Windom Track infield, which will serve as the temporary home field for Wings soccer and Windom football this fall.
TCU forward Angel Ruiz Gomez starred for the Titans, scoring four first-half goals, including one 35 seconds into the game.
However, the Wings were able to tie the game a few minutes later. A lead pass into the offensive zone was touched by a Titan defender’s hand inside the penalty area, resulting in a penalty kick for the Wings. Ricky Callejas blasted the penalty kick into the net, tying the game at 1-1.
But the Titans broke the tie moments later on a goal by Ruiz Gomez. TCU then got a penalty kick of its own, when the Wings were whistled for a foul inside the penalty area.
TCU eventually led 6-1 at halftime, then added a final goal late in the second half.
