The Windom City Council decided recently to not consider raising local property taxes for residents as the hike required to boost flood control projects would be too steep for citizens to pay.
The council discussed that the city currently has a property tax levy of $2,561,842 to cover city facilities and services. A 1% increase in property taxes would net a bit over $25,000 for city coffers. Thus, if $200,000 was needed for flood control, the property tax would have to be hiked by 8%.
Mayor Dominic Jones thought this untenable for taxpayers and the council concurred.
