Plenty of kind words and support for cancer victims filled the air at Tegels Park during the “Spiking Out Cancer” event in Windom.
The event, which has replaced the Walk For Life, raised funds for the fight against cancer and to help provide services for cancer patients in the area. Dr. Mike Stone of Windom, a cancer survivor, was recognized at the event and gave a short speech.
Stone stated, “We started the Lions Club back in 1971. And I just happened to be one of the first 20 guys that joined. I’m now the last one of those 20 that’s still around. And I’m really enjoying Lions and I did a lot with the Lions . . .You can’t even imagine what this club has done over the years.”
Over 90 meals were served at the event and 29 cancer survivors were honored. Organizer Mary Theesfeld stated, “In spite of the floods this summer, we were able to celebrate our survivors. This is so important!”
Theesfeld was grateful to the crowd that came out and for volunteers in the Lions Club and Hy-Vee for bringing the event together. The survivors walk featured bags with candles that lit the path and honored those who fought and still fight cancer.
