Pirates shut out Lakefield Wednesday

Lakefield 000 000 000 = 0-7-0
Windom 000 001 10X = 2-9-1

The Windom Pirates broke through in the late innings Wednesday night, claiming a 2-0 victory over the Lakefield Horned Frogs in First Nite League action. The game was played at Spirit Lake High School in Iowa, due to flooding at Island Park and a saturated field in Lakefield from rainfall on Wednesday morning.

Lakefield had the best early chance to score, but a solid relay to the plate after a double from Lakefield’s Taylor Christopher cut down a runner trying to score, keeping the game scoreless.

The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the sixth inning, when Alex Fink rocketed the first pitch he saw over the right-center field fence for a solo home run and a 1-0 Pirate lead.

Windom added a run in the seventh inning. Matt Madsen led off with a single. Courtesy runner Henry Erickson stole second and moved to third on a Brett Willaby bunt single. Willaby then got himself picked off first base, staying in a rundown long enough to allow Erickson to score for a 2-0 lead.

Pirate reliever Ross Ackerman shut the door on the Frogs after that, as Lakefield had a baserunner in both the eighth and ninth innings but did no damage.

Noah Kloss, Madsen and Willaby each had two hits in the win for the Pirates.

Luke Gilbertson picked up the pitching win, working seven shutout innings. He allowed five hits, walked two and struck out nine. Ackerman earned a two-inning save, allowing two hits and one walk while fanning three.
