County declared federal disaster area

Cottonwood County was among 22 counties in the state that were declared federal disaster areas by President Joe Biden over the weekend.

What a federal disaster declaration means is that public assistance will be available to help pay for public response to the flooding, as well as to help repair or replace public infrastructure. The funding will cover eligible disaster-related city, county and state expenses at 100%, with 75% coming from the federal government and 25% coming from the state.

Emergency Manager Paul Johnson urges individual homeowners to fill out damage assessments to help the county be able to potentially offer assistance to homeowners in the form of federal low-interest loans.
