Debris removal drop-off site is set up

A free drop-off site for flood-damaged debris from homes has been set up in the west parking lot at Windom Area High School.

At an emergency meeting Tuesday, Cottonwood County Commissioners agreed to set up a free drop-off site at the high school for Windom residents to drop off damaged carpet, sheetrock or electronics and appliances.

The drop-off site started collecting items in four roll-offs earlier this afternoon, and will be open from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. for the foreseeable future.

It is available for Windom residents only. People dropping debris off at the high school site will be asked to present an ID or a utility bill to show proof of residence.

To minimize impact on the environment and control cleanup costs, people should separate their waste into five piles:

  1. Large appliances and electronics: refrigerators, freezers, ovens, dishwashers, air conditioners, furnaces, washing machines, clothes dryers, TVs, computers, monitors.
  2. Household hazardous waste: Automotive products like gas, antifreeze and oil. Household cleaners like bleach, ammonia, toilet cleaner, oven cleaner and kitchen cleaner. Mercury-containing items like thermometers, thermostats and fluorescent light bulbs. Paint and solvents. Lawn products like fertilizers and pesticides. Other items not suitable for regular trash, like mattresses, gas cylinders, batteries and swimming pool chemicals.
  3. Demolition waste: Sheetrock, wallboard, wood, pipes, wiring, shingles, cement, insulation, lumber, window glass and any part of the building structure.
  4. Municipal waste: Household garbage, food, lamps, furniture, bedding, clothing, books, magazines, papers, cardboard, small appliances, cookware, dishes, carpet and any asbestos-containing wast.
  5. Woody waste: Trees, branches, logs, stumps and shrubs.

Additionally, other Cottonwood County residents will be able to drop off flood-damaged items for free at the county landfill. People dropping debris off will be asked to provide proof of county residency. Landfill hours are 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. until noon on the first and third Saturdays each month.
