No damage from fire at POET

Quick action and response from the Windom Fire Department prevented damage to the POET biorefining plant last week.

The department was called to the plant at 11:42 a.m. on June 4 for a fire in the dryer. Inspection holes in the dryer and conveyors were used to spray water and remove corn. Additionally, the equipment was run in reverse to get burning corn away from equipment.

Crews returned to Windom at 3:30 p.m., but were dispatched again at 4 p.m. for a fire in a different area of the dryer. Crews were able to get into duct work to find hot spots and extinguish the fire after five more hours on site. The dryer at the plant was restarted the next morning.

No injuries or major damage were reported.
