SECTION BASEBALL: Unfortunate break sends Eagles to elimination bracket

Windom 000 010 0 = 1-6-0
Montevideo 100 001 x = 2-5-0

An unfortunate result on a tremendous defensive play proved to be the difference in Monday’s Section 3AA baseball winner’s bracket final at Marshall.

With runners on second and third with one out in the bottom of the sixth, Windom’s Matthew Voehl raced toward the Montevideo dugout on the third-base side to catch a foul pop-up.

As Voehl made the catch, he fell into the Thunderhawks’ dugout, taking the ball out of play. That allowed the runner from third base to score what proved to be the winning run in a 2-1 Eagle loss.

Montevideo got on the board in the bottom of the first, scoring on a sacrifice fly. After that, Eagle pitcher Quintin Tietz shut the Thunderhawks down the rest of the way, scattering five hits and one walk while fanning three.

The Eagles tied the game in the top of the fifth. Stevie Meyer was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and moved up on a Hunter Palm groundout. Voehl then ripped a single down the third-base line, tying the game at 1-1.

In the bottom of the sixth, a hit batter started the inning. The runner advanced on a sacrifice bunt and a single and stolen base put runners on second and third before the foul pop-up that took Voehl into the Montevideo dugout.

Windom tried to mount a rally in the top of the seventh. Voehl hit a missile to center field that the Montevideo center fielder hauled in in front of the wall. Jackson Joyce drew a walk, putting the tying run on base. But after a pitching change, back-to-back strikeouts ended the threat and the game.
