SECTION TRACK: Eagles send four individuals, one relay

Section 2A Meet

The area will be well-represented at the Class A State Track and Field Meet, following Saturday’s Section 2A Meet.

Windom has four individual qualifiers and one relay advancing to state. Mt. Lake Area-Comfrey has two individuals and two relays, and Martin County West/Butterfield-Odin has one individual qualifier.

In the team standings, Windom’s boys finished second with 67 points. MLAC was eighth with 36 and MCWBO was 18th with 13. Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial-Nicollet won the section title with 75 points.

For the girls, MLAC was 12th with 26 points. Windom was 22nd with 6 points. River Valley won the meet with 87 points.

Windom’s boys had four champion performances Saturday, led by a school-record performance in winning the 4×800 relay. The team of Elias Jensen, Braylen Lyons, Thomas Green and Charlie Smith won the event with a time of 8:16.50, breaking the previous school record by just over one second.

Aaden Nauman added a win in the 1,600 (4:28.63), while Kevin Bleess won the long jump (20-7¼) and Job Ogeka won the triple jump (43-1½).

Other medalists for the Eagle boys included:

  • Elliot Serreyn, third in high jump (5-10).
  • Green, fourth in 800 (2:04.29), sixth in long jump (19-5½).
  • Smith, fifth in 400 (52.86).
  • Bleess, seventh in 100 (11.52), seventh in 200 (24.22).
  • 4×400 relay team (Bleess, Smith, Green, Nauman) sixth (3:40.98).

For the Eagle girls, the lone medalist for the day also was a state qualifier. Victoria Robillard finished fourth in the pole vault, but cleared the height of the state qualifying standard, which was 10-1.

The MLAC boys had one individual state qualifying, as Kody Wassman raced to victory in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:00.89.

MLAC also had two relay teams advance to state as section runners-up. The team of Joseph Torres, Wassman, Cooper Evers and Ethan Schroeder placed second in the 4×800 (8:17.39), while the team of Chase Anacker, Preston Xayachak, Schroeder and Wassman finished second in the 4×400 (3:32.45).

Other medalists for the Wolverine boys included:

  • Zach Klassen, sixth in the 1,600 (4:43.29).
  • Schroeder, seventh in the 800 (2:06.95).
  • Anacker, seventh in the high jump (5-8).
  • Xayachak, eighth in the long jump (18-11¾).

The Wolverine girls were led by Meghan Johnson, who surged late in the race to finish second in the 3,200 with a time of 12:17.91, earning a trip to the state meet.

Other medalists for the Wolverine girls included:

  • Katie Johnson, fourth in the 1,600 (5:42.57), fourth in the 3,200 (12:41.55).
  • Gracie Peters, fifth in the 400 (1:01.84).
  • 4×800 relay team (Theresa Nwaiga, M. Johnson, Hannah Beyer, Peters) fifth (10:51.09).

MCWBO had one state qualifying performance and one other section medalist, with both coming in the same event.

Ryan Pierson raced his way to victory in the 3,200, finishing with a time of 9:56.60. Teammate Grant Koehnen finished sixth (10:33.32).

Section 3A Meet

Westbrook-Walnut Grove/Red Rock Central had one section medalist at Thursday’s Section 3A track and field meet, held at Luverne.

The lone Charger medalist was Ally Linder, who placed sixth in the girls shot put with a throw of 31-10½.
