SECTION BASEBALL: Eagles knock off Cardinals

Windom 000 300 0 = 3-7-0
Fairmont 000 010 0 = 1-6-0

One big inning, combined with a sparkling pitching performance, sent the Windom Eagle baseball team to the Section 3AA semifinals, following a 3-1 win at Fairmont Thursday.

The Eagles overcame a shaky start at the plate, as eight of the first nine Eagle outs recorded came via strikeout.

In the top of the fourth, the Eagles broke a scoreless tie. Hayden Tietz hit a one-out single, followed by a Stevie Meyer double. Tietz scored on a wild pitch. Following a two-out walk to Matthew Voehl and a stolen base, Jackson Joyce gave the Eagles a 3-0 lead with a two-run single.

The Eagles had another good chance to score in the fifth inning, loading the bases with one out. But a strikeout and a groundout ended the threat.

Meanwhile, the Eagle defense kept Fairmont at bay much of the way, as Joyce did not allow a baserunner until a one-out single in the fourth.

The Cardinals got on the board in the bottom of the fifth, scoring on a single. However, the Eagles were able to throw a runner out at the plate to end the inning, keeping the score at 3-1.

The Cardinals had just one baserunner in scoring position the rest of the way, as a groundout ended the game.

Tietz and Joyce had two hits each for the Eagles.

Joyce earned the complete-game pitching win, allowing six hits and one walk while striking out four.
