SECTION BASEBALL: Knights stun Falcons in playoff opener

RTR 200 000 3 = 5-7-2
RRC/WWG 000 002 0 = 2-2-1

A slow start and a late rally proved too much to overcome Saturday, as Red Rock Central/Westbrook-Walnut Grove dropped a 5-2 opening-round loss to Russell-Tyler-Ruthton in the Section 3A playoffs at Lamberton.

RTR plated two runs in the top of the first inning, then kept the Falcons at bay until the the sixth.

After not recording a hit and having only two baserunners prior to the inning, RRC/WWG batted around in the bottom of the sixth. Carter Therkilsen led off the inning with the Falcons’ first hit of the game. Eventually, Isaac Simonson and Quintyn Vold plated runs on bases-loaded walks. But with the bases still loaded and only one out, back-to-back strikeouts ended the Falcon threat.

RTR immediately seized momentum, starting the seventh inning with a single. After a walk with two outs, RTR scored three runs on back-to-back doubles.

The Knights then retired the Falcons in order in the seventh.

Carter Therkilsen and Tyler Therkilsen had the lone hits of the game for the Falcons.

Hudsen Jenniges worked the first 6-2/3 innings in the loss. He allowed six hits, walked three and struck out five.
