AMATEUR BASEBALL: Pirates open with rain-shortened win

Leavenworth 000 00 = 0-1-4
Windom 000 20 = 2-6-0

The Windom Pirates opened the 2024 amateur baseball season Wednesday night with a rain-shortened 2-0 victory over Leavenworth at Island Park.

With the win, the Pirates won back the “Schlo’s Spikes” traveling trophy from the Orioles.

The Pirates got on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning. Matt Madsen hit a two-out single to start the rally. Josh Garrison had an RBI single and scored when Conner Redman reached on a two-base error.

That was all the support Pirate pitchers Trey Randel and Ross Ackerman would need. Randel, in his Pirate debut, worked three innings of one-hit ball, walking two and striking out four. Ackerman worked the final two innings of no-hit ball to pick up the win, striking out three.

Madsen and Noah Kloss each had two hits in the victory.
