SOFTBALL: Eagles sweep to tourney title

The Windom Eagle softball team ran its record to 12-1 for the season Saturday, going 2-0 to win its own home tournament at the Windom Recreation Area.

The Eagles opened the tourney with a 4-0 win over Minneota/Canby. The Eagles then picked up arguably their most impressive win of the season, defeating the top-ranked team in the state in Class A, New Ulm Cathedral, by a 7-3 score.

Against Minneota/Canby, the Eagles got on the board in the bottom of the first, scoring on RBI singles from Anja Nielsen and Charlee Huska.

Kadyn Paulson added an RBI single in the fourth and Reagan Haugen knocked in a run with a single in the sixth.

Tristyn Maras led the Eagles with three hits. Paulson and Haugen had two hits each.

Nielsen tossed a two-hit shutout in the win, striking out 14.

In the nightcap, the Eagles built a lead in the first two innings and claimed a 7-3 win.

The Eagles took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the first on back-to-back RBI doubles from Huska and Leah Hauge.

Then, in the second, the Eagles took the lead for good. Elliot O’Donnell hit a two-run single and scored on a Huska groundout.

The Eagles capped the scoring in the sixth on back-to-back RBI doubles from O’Donnell and Maras.

Maras led the Eagles with three hits. Paulson, O’Donnell and Huska had two hits each.

Nielsen earned the pitching win, allowing five hits and four walks while striking out six.

Madelia 000 000 1 = 1-3-1

Mt. Lake Area-Comfrey got one big inning Friday afternoon, which was enough for a 4-1 victory at Madelia.

The Wolverines broke a scoreless tie in the top of the sixth inning. Annika Brinkman hit an RBI double, followed by a two-run single from Ella Dockter and an error.

Madelia got a run back in the bottom of the seventh, but a pop-up to first base ended the game with no further damage.

Julia Brinkman and Annika Brinkman each had three hits in the win.

Ashlyn Pfeiffer held the Blackhawks to three hits, walking two and fanning two in the win.

Minneota/Canby 000 000 0 = 0-4-0

Red Rock Central/Westbrook-Walnut Grove got a solid pitching performance and some timely hits Friday, claiming a 2-0 win over Minneota/Canby at Minneota.

The Falcons scored both their runs in the top of the fourth inning. Natalie Wahl ripped an RBI double and scored on a wild pitch.

Meanwhile, pitcher Addeson Jenniges was sharp, holding the Vikings to four hits and two walks while striking out five in the victory.
