SOFTBALL: Eagles edge Mavericks in opener

The Windom Eagle softball team opened its 2024 season with a solid performance in a 3-1 victory over Martin County West at the Windom Recreation Area.

The Eagles did all their damage in the bottom of the third inning and made the lead hold up, dodging a pair of significant scoring opportunities for the Mavericks.

In the third, Reagan Haugen drew a one-out walk and stole second and third. She then scored on a Kadyn Paulson RBI single. Anja Nielsen and Charlee Huska followed with RBI singles, giving the Eagles the 3-0 lead.

MCW got a run back in the top of the fourth, but left a runner at second base. MCW had just one more baserunner in the game.

Nielsen and Huska each had two hits in the win.

Nielsen also earned the pitching win, scattering four hits without a walk and striking out 17.

Red Rock Central/Westbrook-Walnut Grove rallied in the top of the seventh, then held on late to claim a 5-4 victory over Renville County West Friday in Danube.

The Falcons tied the game at 1-1 in the third when Hadley Jenniges plated a run on a groundout.

In the fifth, RRC/WWG added a run on an Addeson Jenniges groundout.

Trailing 3-2 in the seventh, the Falcons took the lead. Natalie Wahl ripped a two-run double and scored on an Ella Knakmuhs groundout.

RCW battled back with a run in the bottom of the seventh and had the potential tying run at third, but a groundout ended the game.

Leah Carter and Carlie Ross had two hits each for the Falcons.

Addeson Jenniges worked the final 3-1/3 innings to earn the pitching win, allowing two hits and three walks while fanning four.

Two rough innings proved costly for Mt. Lake Area-Comfrey in Friday’s season opener, as the Wolverines dropped a 9-4 decision to Sleepy Eye at Mt. Lake.

The Wolverines tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the first on an Annika Brinkman RBI groundout.

But Sleepy Eye took the lead with three runs in the top of the second.

The wolverines got a run back in the bottom of the inning when Nadia Phommachan scored on the back end of a double steal.

Then, in the third, the Wolverines pulled to within 4-3 on an RBI double from Ella Dockter.

But Sleepy eye put the game out of reach with four runs in the top of the fourth.

MLAC got its final run on an RBI groundout from Dockter in the fifth.

Doctor had two of the four Wolverine hits in the loss.

Ashlyn Pfeiffer took the pitching loss, allowing 14 hits and two walks while striking out five.

Red Rock Central/Westbrook-Walnut Grove couldn’t convert on scoring chances Thursday, as the Falcons dropped their season opener 9-1 to Murray County Central in Slayton.

The Falcons got on the scoreboard in the top of the first. Addeson Jenniges reached on a dropped third strike, stole second, advanced to third on a Hadley Jenniges single and scored on the back end of a double steal.

However, that was the only run the Falcons would score, as RRC left five runners in scoring position in the game.

MCC answered with two runs in each of the first three innings, then scored three in the sixth to seal the win.

Deanne Roiger had two hits in the loss.

Addeson Jenniges took the pitching loss, working the first 5-1/3 innings. She allowed six hits, walked five and struck out two.
