BASEBALL: Eagles, Wolverines win openers

The Windom Eagles had timely hitting and a strong relief pitching performance Thursday, leading the Eagles to a 14-6 victory over St. James in the season opener at Island Park.

Trailing 2-0 in the first, Stevie Meyer tied the game with a two-run single.

Then, down 5-2 in the third, the Eagles took the lead for good. Quintin Tietz scored on a wild pitch and Meyer hit a bases-clearing double, giving the Eagles the lead. Charles Erickson added an RBI single, with Drew Rothenberger drawing a bases-loaded walk and Adam Perrizo getting hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, completing an eight-run inning.

In the fourth, Meyer singled and scored on an error and Tucker Renquist plated a run with a bunt single. Perrizo added an RBI single in the fifth and an RBI groundout in the sixth.

Meyer led the Eagles with three hits. Rothenberger and Erickson added two hits each.

Rothenberger worked 3-⅓ innings in relief to earn the win, allowing three hits and striking out 10, including eight consecutive batters struck out at one point.

Mt. Lake Area-Comfrey got off to a strong start, then scored in the bottom of the seventh to claim a walk-off 4-3 win over St. Clair in the season-opener Friday in Mt. Lake.

The Wolverines jumped to a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the first. Sam Pidde doubled and scored on a wild pitch, Tanner Schultz scored on a throwing error and Khalid Fontanez hit an RBI single.

St. Clair battled back with two runs in the top of the sixth, tying the game. But the Wolverines secured the win in the bottom of the seventh. Schultz drew a one-out walk and stole second. Tyler Dick was intentionally walked and Fontanez ended the game with an RBI single.

Fontanez and Pidde each had two hits in the win.

Dick worked the first six innings, scattering three hits and three walks while striking out 15.

Aidan Olson worked a shutout seventh for the victory.

A shorthanded Red Rock Central/Westbrook-Walnut Grove squad opened the season without its seniors and without a hit Friday, dropping a 4-0 decision to Renville County West at Sacred Heart.

The Falcons were held to a pair of walks and a fielder’s choice in the game and was abe to advanced just one baserunner into scoring position.

RCW scored in the bottom of the first without a hit, as a sacrifice fly plated a run.

The Jaguars then pushed three runs across in the fifth, scoring on two errors and a single.

Hudsen Jenniges took the pitching loss for the Falcons, allowing four runs on just one hit. He walked five and struck out seven.
