SECTION BOYS BASKETBALL: Wolverines work overtime, punch ticket to state

Lester Prairie 26-26-03 = 55
MLAC 33-19-05 = 57

Mt. Lake Area-Comfrey locked down on defense down the stretch Thursday night, forcing overtime, then holding off Lester Prairie 57-55 to win the Section 2A championship at Minnesota State-Mankato.

The Wolverines started the game strong, scoring the first six points and racing to a seven-point halftime advantage. But the Bulldogs rallied in the second half, holding the Wolverines scoreless for a lengthy stretch.

LP took a four-point lead, but MLAC rallied on a three-pointer from Alex Karschnik and a Kody Wassman lay-up.

With the score tied at 52-52, the Bulldogs had the ball for the final 30 seconds, but the Wolverines prevented LP from getting a quality look at the basket, sending the game to overtime.

In overtime, MLAC started fast, getting an alley-oop lay-up from Karschnik and a three-pointer from Carter Olson to take a 57-52 lead.

LP hit a three-pointer in overtime, but as time wound down, the Wolverine defense again prevented a good look at the basket, and a last-second fadeaway jumper attempt fell short.

Karschnik led the Wolverines with 22 points in the win. Olson added 16 points.

The Wolverines will play March 21 in the opening round of the Class A State Tournament at Target Center in Minneapolis. Five of the eight sections in Class A have their section finals tonight. Pairings for the state tournament are expected to be announced Saturday morning.
