High-speed chase leads to school lockdown

A high-speed chase through parts of Murray and Cottonwood counties Wednesday morning led to an eventual arrest, but not until after an area school went into a lockdown.

The Murray County Sheriff’s Department reported that officers located a vehicle driven by Sean Eric Vanmeveren and were setting up a perimeter to try to make an arrest. Vanmeveren was suspected of numerous vehicle and property thefts in Murray, Cottonwood, Redwood, Jackson and Blue Earth counties in Minnesota and Emmet County in Iowa.

Vanmeveren reportedly led officers on a pursuit before entering a farm site in Murray County and stealing a vehicle. The pursuit then continued for 40 to 45 miles in rural Murray and Cottonwood counties, into the city of Westbrook. That prompted Westbrook-Walnut Grove High School to go into a lockdown.

Vanmeveren was eventually apprehended near Dovray.

More on this incident will appear in the March 20 print and e-editions of the Citizen.
