SECTION BOYS BASKETBALL: Wolverines head to section finals

Springfield 24-50 = 74
MLAC 37-45 = 82

Defense and depth carried the Mt. Lake Area-Comfrey boys basketball team into the Section 2A finals with an 82-74 win Monday over Springfield in the south sub-section championship, played at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter.

The Wolverines prevented the Tigers from going on extended scoring runs while steadily building the lead in the first half.

MLAC led from the opening possession, scoring on a Carter Olson lay-up and a Grant Oakland three-pointer. MLAC then started to pull away late in the half, as Landon Strom had a string of three baskets and a three-pointer to give the Wolverines a 13-point halftime lead.

MLAC was able to push the lead up to 14 on baskets by Strom and Alex Karschnik, but Springfield cut the lead down to five with its only sustained run of the game, hitting three straight three-pointers.

Down the stretch, the Wolverines were able to prevent the Tigers from scoring and hit five free throws late.

Karschnik led the Wolverines with 23 points. Olson scored 17, Strom hit a career-high 14 and Oakland added 10
