SECTION GIRLS BASKETBALL: Early struggles doom Eagles in section final

Windom 19-21 = 40
NLS 55-25 = 80

A disastrous first half left the Windom girls basketball team in a deep hole Friday, as the Eagles fell in the Section 3AA championship game, 80-40, to New London-Spicer at Marshall.

The Eagles had their poorest shooting performance from the field for the entire season, hitting just 10-of-51 shots for a 20% clip.

The shooting woes, coupled with a string of turnovers against the Wildcats’ pressing defense, led to NLS going on a 34-1 scoring run in the first half to blow the game wide open.

A Hannah Dauer three-pointer cut the deficit to 11-8 early, but NLS went on a 17-0 run that ended with a Hadley Sammons free throw.

The Wildcats then went on another 17-0 run, stretching the lead to 45-9. NLS hit 10 of its 11 three-pointers in the game in the opening half, with junior guard Dakota Rich hitting eight treys by herself in the first half.

Trailing 55-19 at halftime, the Eagles tried to cut into the deficit, but NLS was able to extend the lead as high as 43 points.

Dauer led the Eagles with 12 points in the loss. Sammons added 10 points.
