SECTION BOYS BASKETBALL: Wolverines advance to sub-section finals

Loyola 32-30 = 62
MLAC 38-34 = 72

Mt. Lake Area-Comfrey broke the game open with a first-half run Thursday night and never looked back, defeating Mankato Loyola 72-62 in the Section 2A playoffs at St. Peter.

The Wolverines used an early 8-0 run to take control of the game. Kody Wassman hit a lay-up, followed by three-pointers from Grant Oakland and Carter Olson to give the Wolverines a 19-10 lead.

Loyola never got the deficit back within two points the rest of the way. The Wolverines had a strong opening half, hitting five three-pointers and using a balanced attack to take a six-point halftime cushion.

In the second half, the Wolverines pushed the lead as high as 14 points, but Loyola tried to battle its way back into the game.

Key buckets by Alex Karschnik and Olson helped the Wolverines maintain the lead, and three pointers from Grant Regier and Oakland gave the Wolverines a 53-39 advantage.

Loyola hit a pair of three-pointers and tried to hit driving shots to close the gap, but MLAC held the Crusaders scoreless for a four-minute stretch late, effectively sealing the win.

Oakland and Olson each scored 20 points in the win for the Wolverines. Karschnik added 15 and Wassman finished with 11.
