SECTION GIRLS BASKETBALL: Eagles shoot down Cardinals for sub-section title

Windom 37-38 = 75
Fairmont 36-35 = 71

A trio of 7-0 runs in the second half and hot outside shooting proved to be the difference for the Windom Eagles Tuesday night, as the Eagles rallied for a 75-71 win over Fairmont in the Section 3AA South championship game at St. James.

With the win, the Eagles advance to Friday’s Section 3AA championship against New London-Spicer, which will be played at 8 p.m. at Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall.

The Eagle offense got off to a strong start, as Windom was able to crash the offensive glass in the first half and create scoring opportunities. Windom hit seven three-pointers as a team in the opening half, building an early lead. But Fairmont rallied, scoring the last six points of the half to cut Windom’s advantage to one at halftime.

The Cardinals continued their push early in the second half, eventually taking a 50-42 lead with 10:46 left on the clock. Fairmont led 55-47 after a pair of free throws with 8:30 to go.

But defensive changes helped spark the Eagle offense, which closed the game outscoring Fairmont 28-16 over the final 8:20 of the game.

A 7-0 run with Anja Nielsen hitting a runner and a three-pointer and a driving lay-up from Hadley Sammons cut the Fairmont lead to 55-54.

After Fairmont pushed the lead back to 59-54, the Eagles took the lead on a Nielsen three, a Hannah Dauer lay-up and two Dauer free throws.

Then, after Fairmont tied the game, the Eagles took the lead for good. Haidyn Sammons hit a driving lay-up, Nielsen canned a three and Hadley Sammons hit two free throws, giving the Eagles a 68-61 edge.

Leading 70-65, a three-pointer from Nielsen proved to be the dagger with a minute to play, and Dauer hit two late free throws to seal the win.

Nielsen finished with eight three-pointers and a career-high 26 points in the win. Haidyn Sammons added 19 points and Dauer scored 13 in the victory.
