SECTION GIRLS BASKETBALL: Third time’s the charm as Eagles bounce Huskies

JCC 29-40 = 69
Windom 44-37 = 81

The Windom Eagle girls basketball team avenged two regular season losses Thursday night, pulling away late to defeat Jackson County Central 81-69 in the Section 3AA playoffs at Worthington.

The Eagles got off to a solid start on offense, leading 5-0 early, then pulling away late in the first half to take a 44-29 halftime lead. Early foul trouble hurt the Eagles, but Windom got a spark from Anja Nielsen, who hit four first-half three-pointers. Haidyn Sammons and Hannah Dauer each scored in double figures in the first half.

The Eagles were able to build the lead to 17 points early in the second half before fouls and turnovers piled up for the Eagles, allowing JCC to make a comeback. The Huskies cut the Eagle lead down to two points in the late stages of game.

A critical three-pointer from Haidyn Sammons, a lay-up from Tristyn Maras and a pair of Dauer free throws helped the Eagles stabilize the lead. Hadley Sammons added six straight free throws in the final two minutes to seal the win.

Haidyn Sammons led the Eagles with 23 points. Dauer added 20 and Nielsen finished with 18 in the win.
