Longtime judge Bruce Gross passes away

Bruce Gross, the former Cottonwood County Attorney who served over two decades as District 5 judge for the county, passed away last Wednesday at Sanford Medical Center in Sioux Falls.

He was 78 years old.

Gross graduated from Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter in 1968 and graduated from the Hamline University School of Law in 1977.

Upon graduation, he served as a partner in the law firm Ruenitz, Gudmestad, Gross and McDonald in Windom before being appointed as the Cottonwood County attorney in 1979.
Gross served as county attorney until 1989, when he was appointed as Fifth Judicial District judge for Cottonwood County, where he served until his retirement in 2012.

‘A great teaching judge’
Attorney Ron Schramel of Windom currently heads the practice where Gross used to be a partner, coming to Windom in 1995, after Gross was already on the bench.
Schramel noted that Gross was an extremely fair judge, but was mindful to help young attorneys.

“He was a great teaching judge,” Schramel said. “When you go into the courtroom for the first time, some judges expect you to know everything. He understood that I was brand new out of law school and, quite frankly, when you get out of law school, you don’t know hardly anything. You have to learn it on the job.

“He was very patient and would explain how things were. He was great to work with and had a great judicial temperament on the bench.”
