A/T position to remain elected

The prospect of making the Cottonwood County auditor/treasurer an appointed position, rather than an elected one, appears to be dead.

At a special meeting Monday morning, Cottonwood County Commissioners debated the prospect of revisiting the issue.

A public hearing originally was supposed to take place on Feb. 20, but was scrapped after questions arose.

Commissioners Kevin Stevens, Larry Anderson and Donna Gravley all stated they had received abundant feedback from the public on the matter — all negative. As a result, the board decided to not move forward.

By keeping the position elected, the board can now appoint any qualified person to fill the remainder of the term, which is next up for election in 2026.

More from the meeting appears in the Feb. 28 print and e-editions of the Citizen.
