SECTION WRESTLING: Xayachak advances to state

Section 3AA Individual Tourney

The Windom-Mt. Lake wrestling team will have one representative at the Class AA State Wrestling Tournament, following the Section 3AA Tourney, held Saturday in Windom.

At 114 pounds, senior Preston Xayachak earned his second straight berth in the state tournament by winning the section championship. Xayachak had a bye into the semifinals, where he won a 13-4 major decision.

In the championship match, Xayachak avenged a loss from the team tournament, claiming a 4-1 victory over Kane Johnson of New Ulm to win the section title.

The Cobras had three other placewinners at the section tournament.

At 139 pounds, senior Tucker Renquist shook off an early loss with a pair of wins in the wrestlebacks. He then lost a 7-2 decision to Grayson Gibson of Morris/Hancock/Chokio-Alberta to finish in fourth place.

At 127 pounds, sophomore Kameron Koerner dropped an overtime decision in the first round, then claimed a pair of thrilling decisions to advance. In the third-place match, he lost by technical fall to Dawson DeCamp of Marshall.

At 121 pounds, Carson Wall won in the quarterfinals by major decision before taking three straight losses. He was pinned by Uriel Hernandez of Luverne to finish in sixth place.

Section 3A Individual Tourney

Red Rock Central had five placewinners at Saturday’s Section 3A Tournament, held in Pipestone. But the Falcons did not have any individual state qualifiers.

At 152 pounds, sophomore Evan Bartholomaus opened with a win, but dropped a 7-2 semifinal decision to Levi Miest of St. James. Bartholomaus then won by fall and won a 13-2 major decision over Gavin Marotzke of Wabasso to earn third place. Because Miest lost in the championship, Bartholomaus was not able to wrestle for true second.

At 145 pounds, Carter Beranek lost in the quarterfinals, then won a wrestleback match. After taking a loss in the wrestlebacks, Beranek won a 10-7 decision over Garret Martozke of Wabasso to finish fifth.

At 107, Keagan Steen advanced to the semifinals, but suffered a tournament-ending injury at the 3:11 mark of the match, resulting in an injury default loss. He had to medically forfeit out of the wrestlebacks, finishing sixth.

Marshal Willhite (114) and Andrew Pankonin (139) each added a sixth-place finish.
