SECTION HOCKEY: Late flurry lifts New Ulm past Eagles

The Windom Area boys hockey hung tough early, but New Ulm wore the Eagles down over the final half of the game Thursday, eliminating Windom Area from the Section 3A playoffs with an 8-1 decision at New Ulm.

New Ulm got on the board first, scoring at the 11:13 mark of the opening period. But Windom Area quickly answered. The Eagles’ second line displayed some crisp passing, as Andrei Rivera and Luke Anderson assisted on a goal from Ian Nelson.

The game stayed tied at 1-1 until the closing minutes of the second period, when New Ulm scored at the 12:07 mark to take a 2-1 lead.

New Ulm then scored a back-breaking goal with just five seconds left in the second period, taking a 3-1 lead.

That gave New Ulm the momentum heading into the final period, as New Ulm scored four goals in the first nine minutes of the final period and five total goals in the period, sealing the win.

New Ulm outshot the Eagles 33-16 for the game. Adam Dahna finished with 24 saves in the loss.
