SECTION BOYS HOCKEY: Eagles shut out Cardinals

Redwood Valley 0-0-0 = 0
Windom Area 0-3-4 = 7

The Windom Area boys hockey team came to life on offense over the final two periods Tuesday night, opening the Section 3A playoffs with a 7-0 victory over Redwood Valley at the Windom Arena.

After a scoreless opening period, the Eagles found the net 1:02 into the second, when Wriley Haugen scooped up a loose puck at the side of the net and poked it home.

Windom Area padded the lead on a one-timer from Sonny Heil 5:14 into the period, and took a 3-0 lead on Haugen’s second goal of the night with 43 seconds left in the period.

The Eagles then went on a power play binge in the third period, as the Cardinals were whistled for three penalties. Haugen capped a hat trick by scoring a five-on-three power play goal 5:40 into the third. The goal also gave Haugen 100 combined goals and assists for his career.

Nick Espenson added a goal 33 seconds later and Heil scored his second of the night at the 8:56 mark, also on the power play.

Brad Gentry scored the Eagles’ final goal of the game.

Eagle goalie Adam Dahna stopped all 24 shots he faced for his second career shutout.
