TUESDAY BOYS BASKETBALL: Eagles hang on late, top Saints

St. James 30-46 = 76
Windom 50-36 = 86

The Windom Eagle boys basketball team snapped a skid Tuesday night, building a comfortable lead and hanging on late for an 86-76 win over St. James at Windom.

The Eagles came out hot, racing to an early 10-point lead in the opening minutes of the game. The Eagles continued their hot shooting much of the opening half, building the lead to 20 points by the break.

Windom stretched the lead to 22 points and maintained that lead until the final 10 minutes of the game, when the Saints rallied. St. James used turnovers and defensive rebounds to cut into the deficit, eventually whittling the Eagle lead down to eight points.

But Windom’s Drew Rothenberger hit a pair of free throws in the closing minutes, and a rebound of a missed free throw turned into a putback bucket for Elliot Serreyn, sealing the Eagle victory.

Rothenberger led the way with 25 points for the Eagles, with 20 coming in the first half. Eli Lund, who scored the game’s first seven points, finished with 22 points in the win. Serreyn added 16, with 14 coming in the second half. Charles Erickson added 13 points in the win.
