Mildred “Millie” Mae Blackstad was born on April 25, 1938, in Eureka, South Dakota to the late Julius and Helena (Strobel) Reiner. She received her education at Eureka High School where she graduated from. She then furthered her education at Westmar College in Le Mars, Iowa where she received her Bachelor of Music Education degree.
On June 13, 1964, Millie was united in marriage to David Blackstad. She taught elementary music for thirty-six years in the Windom Public Schools. She also taught piano, organ, and guitar in her piano studio for over forty-eight years. In her later years, she subbed in the younger grades in elementary school for many years.
Millie was a member of the First Baptist Church in Windom for many years where she had been playing the piano, organ, trumpet and singing in the lady’s trio. Millie also belonged to the Minnesota Music Teachers Association, National Music Teachers Association, National Federation of Music Clubs, community band and RSVP program.
Millie had many enjoyments in life which included biking, walking, water skiing, snow skiing, and scuba diving. She also loved the outdoors with a lot of hiking and walking through the years. Millie’s love for traveling brought her and David to a different overseas destination every other year and they came close to visiting almost every continent in their travels.
Millie was receiving hospice care in her own home in Windom, and passed away there, with David at her side, on Friday, January 5, 2024, at the age of 85 years.
Millie is survived by her husband of fifty-nine years, David Blackstad of Windom, and one brother, Fred (Darlene) Reiner of Illinois.
Millie is preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Esther and her husband, Marvin.
