BOYS BASKETBALL: Eagles win in double overtime, Falcons’ Simonson sets record

Windom 25-31-07-07 = 70
St. James 28-28-07-03 = 66

The Windom Eagle boys basketball team overcame a rough shooting performance and a second-half deficit Saturday to claim a 70-66 victory over St. James in a game played at Target Center in Minneapolis.

The Eagles shot just under 33% from the field for the game and hit just 2-of-18 from three-point range in the game. The Eagles also struggled much of the game from the free throw line.

But the Eagles sent the game to overtime tied at 56 after a Job Ogeka free throw.

In the first overtime, Windom trailed early, but a Drew Rothenberger lay-up with six seconds left tied the game at 63-63, sending things to a second overtime.

In the second overtime, the Eagles overcame two players fouling out and took the lead on an Ogeka free throw. A steal and lay-up from Carter Rossow helped seal the victory.

Elliot Serreyn led the Eagles with 23 points and 19 rebounds. Rothenberger finished with 21 points, eight rebounds and five steals in the win. Ogeka scored nine points and had 11 rebounds.

Wabasso 10-42 = 52

Red Rock Central held off a frantic second-half rally and saw a significant milestone set as the Falcons defeated Wabasso 57-52 Saturday in Lamberton.

RRC held a 22-point halftime lead, holding Wabasso to 10 first-half points. But the Rabbits roared to life in the second half, outscoring RRC 42-25 and pulling within two points four different times.

The Falcons were able to maintain the lead despite shooting a shade below 32% from the field.

The game saw a major milestone for the Falcons, as senior Isaac Simonson became the program’s career leader for rebounds. Simonson finished the game with 17 points and 21 boards. He broke the previous record of 839 career rebounds, set by Mark Engen in 2005.

Jayden Lang added 14 points and Ashton Holmen finished with 10 points in the win.

SWC 31-24 = 55
RRC 21-20 = 41
