Region, state still have poor ice conditions

The unseasonable winter weather has put a halt to many favorite winter activities in Minnesota.

Among them in Cottonwood County is ice fishing.

According to DNR Area Fisheries Supervisor Ryan Doorenbos, many lakes across the region still had open water as recently as last week, and what little ice is on lakes isn’t nearly thick enough to support activity.

“Typically, our staff is doing oxygen testing, so we’re recording ice thickness and the amount of snow on lakes,” Doorenbos said. “The most recent year we’ve had similar conditions was the winter of 2016-17. On Jan. 8 that year, we had five inches of ice. Right now, there’s maybe four inches of ice, but ice conditions are not good. We have open water all over.”
