Donald was baptized and confirmed in Delafield Church. He attended Wilder Elementary School and later graduated from Windom High School in the class of 1974. Don had the distinction of being a candidate for admission to the U.S. Military Academy, also known as West Point. He served in the U.S. Army at Fort Hood, Texas from September 13, 1974, until he was honorably discharged on October 5, 1978.
