TUESDAY HOCKEY: Eagle girls top Austin, boys win at Fairmont

The Windom Area girls hockey team had a productive offensive night Tuesday, as the Eagles rolled to a 6-1 victory at Austin.

The Eagles raced to a quick 3-0 lead in the opening period, then tacked on three late insurance goals.

Windom Area got on the board with 6:04 left in the opening period, as Kennady Dronen redirected a shot by Lyvia McManigle into the net. Moments later, a scramble in front of the net saw Madyson Fredin give the Eagles a 2-0 lead. Then, with 1:29 left in the opening period, Alycia Meyeraan took a feed from Fredin in front of the net and stuffed home a goal for a 3-0 lead.

Austin netted a goal in the second, but the Eagles closed the game strong. Mataya Hall fired a blast from the blue line on the power play, giving Windom Area a 4-1 lead. Goals from Ella Dockter and Marissa Becker 23 seconds apart sealed the win.

The Eagles outshot the Packers 54-23. Goalie Fiona Robillard finished with 22 saves.

The Windom Area boys hockey team got off to a quick start and made an early lead stand Tuesday, claiming a 4-2 victory at Fairmont.

The Eagles got on the board 42 seconds into the game, as Ian Nelson took a feed from Sonny Heil and found the back of the net. Heil added a goal of his own later in the period, giving the Eagles a 2-0 lead.

The Eagles’ first line continued to do damage in the second period, as Wriley Haugen scored off assists from Heil and Nelson. Then, less than a minute later, Heil scored his second goal of the game, assisted by Nelson, giving the Eagles a 4-0 lead.

The Cardinals scored at the 9:11 mark of the second period, then added a power play goal with 2:38 remaining in the game.

Windom Area outshot Fairmont 36-34 for the game. Goalie Adam Dahna finished with 32 saves in the win.
