WRESTLING: Cobras compete at Redwood River Riot

The Windom-Mt. Lake wrestling team finished in 20th place over the weekend in the 36-team Redwood River Riot, held at Redwood Falls.

The Cobras finished with 55 team points. Marshall won the team title with 163½ points.

Individually, the Cobras had two placewinners in the boys varsity division.

At 114 pounds, Preston Xayachak opened with a pair of falls, then won a 7-3 overtime decision in the semifinals. In the championship, Xayachak dropped a 5-3 decision to Anthony Nichols of Edina to finish second.

At 107 pounds, Matthew Voehl opened with a 9-4 win and a 6-4 win. In the semifinals, Voehl was pinned in 4:11. Voehl bounced back with a fall, then pinned Kaston Clarke of Fulda-Murray County Central in 4:59 to finish third in the bracket.

The girls on the WML squad saw their first action, wrestling in all-girls brackets during the tournament.

At 190 pounds, Mareena Jepsen opened with three straight falls to advance to the finals. She was pinned in 1:52 by Esther Say of Marshall in the championship, finishing second overall.

At 235 pounds, Zaria Harrington finished the tournament with a 1-3 record, finishing fourth overall. Her victory came by injury default.

Red Rock Central finished the Redwood River Riot in 34th place in the team standings with 8½ points.

The Falcons did not have any individual placewinners. At 152 pounds, Evan Bartholomaus finished with a 3-2 record at the tournament, but was knocked out of the bracket one victory shy of earning a medal.

Andrew Pankonin went 1-2 at 145 pounds, giving the Falcons their only other points of the tournament.
