TUESDAY HOCKEY: Eagle girls, boys both fall

The Windom Area girls hockey team couldn’t hold onto an early lead Tuesday, as Mankato West rallied for a 5-1 victory at All-Seasons Arena in Mankato.

The Scarlets scored five unanswered goals after the Eagles got on the board first.

Windom Area’s goal came halfway through the opening period, as Ella Dockter scored on an unassisted breakaway.

Bu the Scarlets answered, tying the game 1:44 into the second period and scoring late in the second for a 2-1 lead.

West added a goal 39 seconds into the third period, then netted two goals in the final two minutes of play to seal the win.

West outshot the Eagles 42-17 for the game. Goalie Fiona Robillard finished with 37 saves in the loss.

Luverne 5-3-1 = 9

The Windom Area boys hockey team fell behind early and never recovered Tuesday night, dropping a 9-4 decision at Luverne.

The Cardinals scored five goals in the first 9:07 of the game, racing to a 5-0 lead.

The Eagles cut the deficit to 5-2, scoring late in the opening period on a goal from Andrei Rivera, then early in the second on a goal from Sonny Heil.

But the Cardinals regained control, scoring three times later in the second period to push the lead to 8-2.

The Eagles were able to cut the deficit to 8-4 with back-to-back goals early in the third period by Karson LaCanne and Ian Nelson, but the Cardinals held a commanding edge in shots and prevented a further Eagle comeback.

Luverne outshot the Eagles 51-19 for the game. Goalie Adam Dahna finished with 42 saves in the loss.
