WEEKEND WRESTLING: Cobras have three champs at St. James

Paul Krueger Tourney

The Windom-Mt. Lake wrestling team opened the season by placing sixth in the team standings at the Paul Krueger Tournament, held Saturday in St. James.

WML finished with 76 points. Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial won the tourney with 179½ points.

The Cobras had three champions in the tournament, including the wrestler named the tourney’s most outstanding wrestler.

At 114 pounds, Matthew Voehl received a first-round bye. He then recorded a fall in 2:37. Then, in the championship, Voehl claimed a 4-2 decision win over Connor Othoudt of Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial to win the title.

At 121 pounds, Preston Xayachak went 3-0 in a four-person round-robin setup, recording two first-period pins, then winning a 7-1 decision over runner-up Ryder Antony of LCWM.

At 139 pounds, Tucker Renquist received a first-round bye, then claimed an 11-2 major decision. In the finals, Renquist pinned Kollin Anderson of St. James in 5:58. Renquist was named the tournament’s most outstanding wrestler.

Kameron Koerner finished fourth at 133 pounds. John Bergeman finished fifth at 189 pounds. Eagan Maras finished sixth at 152 pounds.

Flandreau Booster Club Tourney

The Red Rock Central wrestling team opened the season Saturday across the border, taking part in the Flandreau Booster Club Tourney in Flandreau, S.D.

The Falcons were one of just two Minnesota teams in the 12-team field, which was contested using South Dakota’s 14 weight-class system, rather than the 13 weight classes in Minnesota. RRC finished seventh in the team standings with 75 points. Madison, S.D., won the team title with 215½ points.

RRC had one champion and two runners-up in the tournament.

At 106 pounds, Keegan Steen recorded a pair of first-period pins, then pinned Brody Kopp of Luverne in 5:17 to win the title.

At 144 pounds, Andrew Pankonin claimed a 4-3 decision, then recorded a fall. He was pinned by Caleb Hodges of Madison in 5:41 in the finals, finishing second.

At 150 pounds, Evan Bartholomaus recorded a fall in 2:17, then won by fall in 1:33. In the finals, he dropped a 4-2 decision to Gavin Kloos of Deuel, S.D., to finish second.
