THURSDAY GIRLS BASKETBALL: Eagles surge past Dragons

The Windom girls basketball team pulled away in the second half Thursday night, rolling to an 85-62 victory over Adrian-Ellsworth in the home opener in Windom.

The Eagles took command late in the opening half, jumping to a 10-point halftime lead behind strong defense and attacking the basket. Hadley Sammons scored 12 points in the opening half, while Haidyn Sammons added nine early points.

In the second half, the defense intensified for the Eagles, as Windom forced the Dragons into 29 turnovers for the game. That allowed the Eagles to get out in transition and pull away for the victory.

Hadley Sammons led the Eagles with 26 points, seven assists and five steals in the win. Haidyn Sammons added 21 points, seven rebounds and five steals. Hannah Dauer finished with 17 points and Anja Nielsen scored 13 in the win.

Springfield 35-29 = 64

The Red Rock Central girls basketball team fell behind early and couldn’t recover Thursday night, taking a 35-20 loss in its season-opener at Springfield.

The Tigers took charge early, building an early double-digit lead and stretching the lead to 15 by the end of the first half by forcing the Falcons into 32 turnovers for the game.

In the second half, the Falcons tried to rally, but Springfield was able to stretch its lead to 20 points before the Falcons cut the deficit to 13 in the closing minutes.

Taylor Lang led the Falcons with 21 points, including five three-pointers. Ella Erickson added 10 points in the loss.
