TUESDAY GIRLS BASKETBALL: Eagles fall at horn, Wolverines win in OT

Windom 31-25 = 56
Fairmont 26-31 = 57

The Windom Eagle girls basketball team had a state-ranked opponent on the ropes on its own court Tuesday night. But a three-pointer at the buzzer by Fairmont’s Grace Pendergast rattled home, giving the Cardinals a 57-56 come-from-behind win over the Eagles at Fairmont.

Windom trailed by eight early but stormed back. Haidyn Sammons scored 15 points in the first half, sparking a surge that saw the Eagles take a five-point halftime lead.

In the second half, the Cardinals held the Eagles to five field goals, as Fairmont started its comeback. Windom also struggled from the free throw line late, finishing the game 13-of-21 from the stripe.

The missed chances from the line gave Fairmont an opening. Windom hit two-of-four from the line in the closing seconds, clinging to a two-point lead with 10 seconds to go. But Fairmont pushed a missed free throw upcourt to Pendergast, who fired from the top of the key, with the ball rattling through the hoop as the final horn sounded.

Haidyn Sammons led the Eagles with 21 points in the loss. Hannah Dauer scored 10. Hadley Sammons and Anja Nielsen had nine points each.

The Wolverines trailed by seven with under 90 seconds to play, but battled back to tie the game. A three-pointer from Reagan Pedersen and a driving lay-up from Ellamae Peters tied the game at 70-70.

In overtime, the Wolverines took the lead on another Peters lay-up. Cedar Mountain tied the game on a free throw, but a three-pointer from Julia Brinkman and solid free throw shooting late sealed the victory for the Wolverines.

Annika Brinkman led the way for MLAC with 21 points. Julia Brinkman scored 18 and Peters finished with 17 points in the victory.
