SATURDAY GIRLS BASKETBALL: Eagles open season with win

Windom 36-30 = 66
Worthington 29-22 = 51

A strong offensive performance and solid defense allowed the Windom Eagles to open the 2023-24 season with a 66-51 win Saturday over Worthington during the Minnesota West Turkey Shootout in Worthington.

The Eagles attacked the basket throughout the game. Despite shooting below 50% from the free throw line, Windom was able to put the Worthington defense on its heels as the Trojans battled foul trouble.

Windom broke the game open halfway through the opening half, as back-to-back three-pointers from Hannah Dauer and Haidyn Sammons sparked the Eagle burst, giving the Eagles a seven-point halftime lead.

Then, in the second half, the Eagle defense wore the Trojans down, as Windom forced 20 turnovers in the game.

Sammons led the Eagles with a career-high 19 points. Dauer added 14 points. Adison Hogan chipped in nine points.
