SATURDAY GIRLS HOCKEY: Eagles pick up first win

The Windom Area girls hockey team erupted on offense in the opening period Saturday afternoon, rolling to a 6-1 victory over Austin at the Windom Arena.

The Eagles struck for five goals in the first nine minutes of the game and never looked back in the win, outshooting Austin 36-14 for the game.

The Eagles opened the scoring early in the game, after Austin took a penalty for too many players on the ice. Madyson Fredin redirected a shot from Kennady Dronen into the net, giving the Eagles a power play goal 3:45 into the game.

Just over a minute later, an intercepted pass led to Lyvia McManigle firing a shot past the Austin goalie for a 2-0 lead.

The Eagles then blew the game open with three goals in a two-minute stretch. Fredin netted her second rebound goal of the game 7:06 into the period. Then, at the 7:53 mark, Ella Dockter took a feed from Dronen and snapped a wrist shot into the net. And at the 8:48 mark, Marissa Becker picked off a pass and scored on an unassisted breakaway for a 5-0 lead.

Early in the second period, Becker scored her second goal of the game on a centering feed from Marenna Bang, giving the Eagles a 6-0 lead.

Austin snapped the shutout with a goal with 1:30 left in the game.

Eagle goalie Fiona Robillard finished with 13 saves.
