STATE CROSS COUNTRY: Eagle boys take sixth, Wolverines ninth

Local runners had a strong showing Saturday at the Class A State Boys Cross Country Meet, held at the Les Bolstad University of Minnesota Golf Course in Falcon Heights.

Windom finished sixth in the team standings with 175 points. Mt. Lake Area was ninth in the team standings with 235 points. In addition, two local runners placed in the top 25 at the meet, earning All-State honors.

Heritage Christian Academy won the state title with 106 points.

Windom established a good pace early in the race and was able to record a spread of just over a minute from its first to its fifth runner.

Seniors Aaden Nauman, Thomas Green and Charlie Smith ran much of the race together, with Nauman and Green finishing the race side-by-side. Nauman placed 31st with a time of 16:55.1, while Green was 32nd, finishing in 16:55.2. Smith dropped back in the final mile, finishing 70th with a time of 17:27.1.

Bryce Green placed 80th (17:39.1) and Braylen Lyons was 107th (17:59.6).

Meanwhile, at the front of the pack, MLA’s Kody Wassman battled with the top five for the first two miles of the race before being overtaken. Wassman finished in 14th, earning All-State honors with a time of 16:31.7. Zach Klassen finished 49th for the Wolverines (17:06.1), followed by Tyrone Stout in 98th (17:53.2), Ethan Schroeder in 115th (18:12.1) and Joseph Torres in 126th (18:25.7).

Martin County West/Butterfield-Odin senior Ryan Pierson held the lead through the first mile of the race before dropping back in the pack. Still, he finished with an All-State performance, finishing 19th with a time of 16:41.4.
